University of Coimbra
Founded in 1290, the University of Coimbra is one of the world's oldest continuously operating universities and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The historic campus encompasses the former Royal Palace, the famous Iron Gate, and the magnificent Baroque library. Notable alumni include Saint Anthony, poet Camões, and virtually every Portuguese Prime Minister. The university maintains unique academic traditions including traditional black capes and student Fado singing. The Paço das Escolas courtyard offers panoramic views over the city and Mondego River valley.
