Tunnel of Hope

The Tunnel of Hope is a museum preserving 20 meters of the 800-meter tunnel that was Sarajevos lifeline during the 1992-1996 siege - the longest siege of any city in modern history. Built under the airport runway to connect the besieged city with free territory, it allowed food, medicine, weapons and people to pass. Extremely moving exhibition.

The complete tunnel was 800 meters long, 1.6m high and 1m wide. It was dug by hand in 4 months in 1993 under UN-controlled airport runway. Today 20 meters are preserved in the museum.

It was the only connection between besieged Sarajevo and outside world for 3 years. An estimated 1 million people passed through and 20 million tons of supplies. It gave hope to a city under constant bombardment.
