Toshogu is a shrine dedicated to Tokugawa Ieyasu, the founder of the Tokugawa shogunate that ruled Japan for over 250 years. It is one of Japan's most lavishly decorated shrines, with over 5,000 intricate carvings covering the buildings. Famous carvings include the 'Three Wise Monkeys' and the 'Sleeping Cat'. UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Early morning (8am opening) to avoid tour groups. Allow 2-3 hours. Autumn foliage (October-November) is spectacular. Spring cherry blossoms also beautiful.

The famous carving shows three monkeys: 'See no evil', 'Hear no evil', 'Speak no evil'. It is one of eight panels on the Sacred Horse's stable depicting life stages. The monkeys represent Confucian wisdom: avoiding evil by not looking at it, listening to it, or spreading it.
