Topkapi Palace
Topkapi Palace was the heart of the Ottoman Empire for 400 years. Sultans lived here, harem intrigues unfolded, sacred Islamic relics were kept.
Palace History
Mehmed II began construction after conquering Constantinople in 1453. The palace grew over centuries: each sultan added something. In 1856, sultans moved to Dolmabahce. In 1924, Ataturk turned it into a museum.
Palace Structure
Four courts: First — public, Second — administrative, Third — sultan's private quarters and treasury, Fourth — gardens overlooking Bosphorus.
Harem
300+ rooms. Sultan's mother, wives, concubines, eunuchs. Separate ticket, but must-see.
Treasury
Spoonmaker's Diamond — 86 carats. Topkapi Dagger with emeralds. Nadir Shah's Throne.
Sacred Relics
Prophet Muhammad's cloak and sword. Keys to Kaaba. Quran recited here continuously since 15th century.
Practical Information
Open 9:00-18:00 (summer), until 16:00 (winter). Tuesday closed. Allow minimum 3 hours. Tram T1, Sultanahmet stop.
