The Temple of the Sun is part of the famous Cross Group and features the best-preserved relief in Palenque. The interior tablet depicts a sun shield with two facing profiles representing the Jaguar God of warfare and the underworld. The small but elaborate structure reflects the importance of solar worship in Maya cosmology.
