Temple of Saint Sava

The Temple of Saint Sava is one of the largest Orthodox churches in the world and the largest in the Balkans, dedicated to the founder of the Serbian Orthodox Church. Built on Vracar plateau where Ottomans burned Saint Savas relics in 1595, construction began in 1935 but the interior mosaics were only completed in 2021. The church can accommodate 10,000 people and features stunning interior mosaics covering 15,000 square meters.

How to Get There

Bus 30, 31, 33, 39, 42, 47, 48, 59, 78, E9 to Karađorđev park stop. BgVoz train 1, 2 to Karađorđev park. 15-minute walk from center via Liberation Boulevard. Interior with mosaics is impressive — one of the largest Orthodox churches in the world.

Construction was interrupted by WWII, then communist Yugoslavia deprioritized religious buildings. Work resumed in 1985 and the exterior was completed by 2004. The spectacular interior mosaics, funded largely by Russian donations, were finished only in 2021 - 86 years after groundbreaking

Yes, services are open to all. Morning liturgy is at 7:30 or 9:00, evening at 17:00 or 18:00. Be respectful, dress appropriately, and arrive quietly if service has begun. Photography during services is discouraged

Travel Tips

Useful tips for visiting Temple of Saint Sava

The newly completed interior mosaics are spectacular - one of the world's largest. Free entry but modest dress required (no shorts/sleeveless). Light a candle, it's the local tradition. The crypt is open separately and worth visiting.

Tram 9 or 10 from city center, stop 'Hram Svetog Save'. Walking from Slavija Square takes 5 minutes. The church is visible from many parts of Belgrade.
