The Temple of Inscriptions is the most famous building in Palenque and one of the most significant archaeological monuments of Maya civilization. This nine-level, 25-meter-high pyramid is renowned for the tomb of King Pakal the Great, discovered in 1952, which revolutionized understanding of Maya burial practices. The walls contain the second-longest known Maya hieroglyphic text.
