Temple Bar

Temple Bar is Dublins cultural quarter, a labyrinth of cobblestone streets packed with pubs, restaurants, galleries, and street performers. Named after Sir William Temple who lived here in the 1600s, it was nearly demolished for a bus station in the 1980s but saved to become the citys most vibrant nightlife and arts district. The area hosts markets, live music venues, and iconic pubs like The Temple Bar itself.

Both! Its touristy with inflated prices, but the atmosphere, live music, and colorful streets are genuinely enjoyable. Visit during the day for culture (galleries, markets) and at night for the pub experience. Just dont expect an authentic locals hangout.

Most pubs have live music from early evening. The Temple Bar pub, Oliver St. John Gogartys, and The Auld Dubliner are famous for it. For more authentic sessions, locals recommend The Cobblestone or Devitts in other areas.

Travel Tips

Useful tips for visiting Temple Bar

Drinks are pricier here than other Dublin areas - locals call it a tourist trap but its still fun. For authentic live music try The Cobblestone in Smithfield instead. The Saturday food market at Meeting House Square is excellent. Gallery of Photography and Irish Film Institute are cultural gems
