Sukhothai Historical Park

Sukhothai Historical Park contains the ruins of Thailand's first kingdom, a UNESCO World Heritage site. This ancient 13th-century capital with dozens of temples, stupas, and Buddha statues spreads across more than 70 square kilometers.

Main attractions: Wat Mahathat — the central temple with a colossal Buddha statue, Wat Si Sawai in Khmer style, Wat Sa Si on an island in a pond. The ruins look especially picturesque at sunrise and sunset.

How to Get There

From Bangkok: flight to Sukhothai (1.5 h, Bangkok Airways) — expensive. Bus from Mo Chit (7 h, ~400 THB) — budget option. Train to Phitsanulok (4.5 h) + bus 1 h. Park is 15 km from New Sukhothai — tuk-tuk ~100 THB. Around park: bicycle (30-50 THB/day).

Travel Tips

Useful tips for visiting Sukhothai Historical Park

Central zone — 100 THB, each additional zone another 100 THB. Rent bicycle from 30 THB at shops. Less crowded than Ayutthaya — more peaceful atmosphere. Stay in New Sukhothai, park is 12km away. Loy Krathong festival here is spectacular.

Bus from Bangkok 6-7 hours or fly to Sukhothai. Songthaews run between new town and park for 30 THB.

Wat Mahathat — main temple with lotus pond. Wat Si Chum — giant seated Buddha behind narrow walls. Northern zone less visited.
