Created by sculptor Edmund Hellmer in 1921, the statue is gilded bronze (not solid gold). It depicts Strauss II playing violin in front of his orchestra. The gold plating represents his title as "Waltz King." The Vienna Philharmonic played "The Blue Danube" at the unveiling ceremony.
