Shinkyo Bridge ('Sacred Bridge') is considered one of Japan's three most beautiful bridges and the gateway to the UNESCO World Heritage shrines and temples of Nikko. Over 300 years old, its elegant vermillion arch spans the Daiya River. The bridge features a unique structural design with no support pillars in the water.

Legend says that in 766, the monk Shodo Shonin reached the raging river but couldn't cross. A deity appeared and threw two giant snakes that formed a magical bridge. The monk crossed and founded Nikko's first temple. The current bridge was rebuilt in 1636.
