Shakespeare and Company
Shakespeare and Company is a legendary English-language bookshop on the banks of the Seine facing Notre-Dame, founded by George Whitman in 1951. This enchanting labyrinth of books, murals, and bohemian curiosities has been a haven for writers, poets, and travelers. The bookshop runs the Tumbleweeds program - accommodation for young writers in exchange for working in the store. George's daughter Sylvia now runs the place. The adjacent café serves coffee and pastries with Notre-Dame views. Literary readings and events happen weekly.
