Senate Square

Senate Square is the heart of historic Helsinki and one of the finest examples of neoclassical architecture in the world. Designed by German architect Carl Ludvig Engel in the 1820s-1850s, the square is dominated by Helsinki Cathedral and surrounded by the Government Palace, main building of the University of Helsinki, and the National Library. The statue of Tsar Alexander II stands in the center.

The bronze statue depicts Tsar Alexander II of Russia, who ruled Finland as a Grand Duchy and granted significant reforms. It was unveiled in 1894 and remains a symbol of Finnish autonomy under Russian rule.
