Sanctuary of Atotonilco
The Sanctuary of Atotonilco, known as the 'Sistine Chapel of Mexico', is a UNESCO World Heritage Site featuring one of the country's most magnificent collections of Mexican Baroque murals. Built in the 18th century, murals by Antonio Martínez de Pocasangre created over 30 years cover nearly every interior surface. Miguel Hidalgo took the Virgin's banner from here in 1810, symbolizing the independence movement
