Santa Maria Maggiore
Santa Maria Maggiore is one of Rome's four major papal basilicas and the largest Catholic church dedicated to the Virgin Mary. Built in the 5th century, it preserves exceptional Byzantine mosaics in its nave and apse, and a gilded coffered ceiling allegedly coated with the first gold brought from the Americas. The stunning Cosmati floor, Borghese Chapel, and Pauline Chapel are among its treasures. A pilgrimage site where snow allegedly fell in August marking the church's location.
