Sanmachi Suji is Takayama's stunning historic district featuring three parallel streets (Ichinomachi, Ninomachi, Sannomachi) lined with Edo-period wooden buildings. These carefully preserved dark-timbered structures were once merchant houses and sake breweries; many now house shops, cafes, and small museums. You can taste local sake at traditional breweries, sample famous Hida beef, and purchase traditional crafts. The street atmosphere transports you to old Japan. The 1.5km walking loop is flat and accessible. Shops typically open 9:00-17:00; some close by 16:30 in winter.
