San Giorgio Maggiore is a small island across from St. Mark's Square, featuring Palladio's magnificent church and an active Benedictine monastery. The bell tower offers the best panorama of Venice - better than San Marco because it includes the view of the square itself. The church contains Tintoretto's last paintings. The island is peaceful and away from the crowds.
