Sachsenhausen
Sachsenhausen is the heart of Frankfurt's apple wine culture and a traditional centre of German cider-making. The district stretches south of the Main River and is home to numerous traditional Apfelweinwirtschaften (cider taverns) where local Apfelwein (tart apple wine with 5.5% alcohol) is served in the distinctive Bembel pitchers. Alt-Sachsenhausen features narrow cobblestone alleys, half-timbered buildings, and a traditional atmosphere. UNESCO-recognized for its apple wine heritage. Perfect for experiencing traditional Hessian cuisine like Handkäse mit Musik (cheese with onions) and Rippchen mit Kraut (smoked pork with sauerkraut). In summer, cider is refreshing; in winter, try it hot with sugar and spices.
