Discovered in 1980, the Roman Theatre is the second largest in Spain and the oldest preserved. Built in the 1st century BC, it seated approximately 10,000 spectators. A modern museum features exhibitions explaining the history of Roman Gades.

The Roman Theatre was discovered in 1980 during the demolition of old foundry workshops in the El Pópulo neighborhood. Systematic excavations revealed a largely intact theatre, built by order of Lucius Cornelius Balbus.
