Roman Theatre of Arles
The Roman Theatre of Arles dates from Emperor Augustus's reign in the late 1st century BC, making it one of the earliest stone theatres in the Roman world. Originally featuring 33 rows of seats across three levels for 10,000 spectators, it was built into the Hauture hill. Famous Roman statues were discovered here, including Augustus and the Venus of Arles. Today the theatre hosts summer performances during the Arles Festival. Part of UNESCO World Heritage since 1981.
