Rangitoto Island
Rangitoto Island is New Zealand's youngest volcano and an icon of the Hauraki Gulf, recognizable by its distinctive cone shape visible from across Auckland. The volcano erupted just 600 years ago, making it geologically very young. The 3.1 km summit track leads through lava fields and the world's largest pohutukawa forest to the 259-meter summit, offering stunning panoramic views of Auckland and the Hauraki Gulf. Visitors can explore exciting lava caves with a torch. No drinking water or facilities on the island - bring everything you need.
