Proteus (Olm)
The proteus or 'human fish' (Proteus anguinus) is a unique creature living only in the karst caves of Slovenia and Croatia. This blind amphibian with pinkish, human-like skin can live up to 100 years and survive years without food. It can fully regenerate lost limbs. Called 'baby dragon' in Slovenian folklore due to its appearance during floods. The Vivarium Proteus located within Postojna Cave Park offers a chance to see this rare creature up close with scientific explanation. In 2016, proteus eggs hatched in the cave for the first time in decades, with successful breeding continuing since.
