Place Guillaume II

Place Guillaume II, affectionately known as Knuedler by locals, is the main square and heart of Luxembourg City. Named after Grand Duke William II, the square features his equestrian statue from 1884 and the neoclassical City Hall (1838) with its lion sculptures. Originally the site of a 13th-century Franciscan monastery, today it hosts the Tourist Office, twice-weekly farmers markets, and major cultural events throughout the year.

The nickname Knuedler comes from the Luxembourgish word for knot (knued), referring to the knotted rope belts worn by Franciscan monks. A Franciscan monastery stood on this site from the 13th century until its demolition, and the name stuck with locals.

Farmers markets take place every Wednesday and Saturday morning. The square transforms with stalls selling fresh local produce, flowers, cheese, and other delicacies. During the holiday season, a Christmas market adds to the festive atmosphere.
