Piazza del Campo is the heart of Siena and one of Europe's most beautiful public squares. It features a unique shell-shaped design with a sloping floor divided into nine segments. The square hosts the famous Palio horse race twice annually. It is dominated by the Palazzo Pubblico and the towering Torre del Mangia.

'Campo' means 'field' in Italian. The area was originally a market and open space before becoming the city's main square in the 12th century.
The Palio is a traditional horse race held twice yearly on July 2 and August 16. Ten contrade (neighborhoods) compete for the Palio banner. Riders race bareback and the race lasts only 90 seconds around the square.
