Philosopher's Way
The Philosopher's Way is a famous walkway along the northern bank of the Neckar River, offering unparalleled panoramic views of the Old Town and Heidelberg Castle. Named during the Romantic Period for the professors and philosophers who walked here seeking inspiration, the path stretches about 3 km and features an almost Mediterranean microclimate with exotic plants including lemon trees, cypresses, and palms. It can be accessed via the steep Schlangenweg from the Old Bridge or from Bergstraße. Along the way you'll find the Philosopher's Garden, remains of 1000-year-old monasteries, and a Celtic hill fort dating to the 4th century BCE.
