Painted Churches of Troodos
Ten Byzantine churches in the Troodos Mountains inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 1985. These churches represent one of the largest collections of churches and monasteries from the former Byzantine Empire. They contain precious frescoes and murals dating from the 11th to 16th centuries, providing a comprehensive overview of Byzantine and post-Byzantine painting over 500 years. Their distinctive steep-pitched wooden roofs have protected the fragile murals through centuries of mountain weather.
