Oura Church
Oura Church, also known as the French Catholic Church, is Japan's oldest surviving church, built in 1864 in French Gothic style. It is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site 'Hidden Christian Sites in the Nagasaki Region'. The church is famous for the 'Discovery of Hidden Christians' in 1865, when Japanese believers secretly revealed their faith to French priests after 250 years of persecution. The stunning stained glass windows and wooden altar are among the finest in Japan. Admission includes the adjacent Christian Heritage Museum in the renovated former seminary building.
