Cathedral Island (Ostrów Tumski)
Ostrow Tumski is the oldest part of Wroclaw and was historically a real island before land reclamation. Considered the spiritual cradle of the city, it houses the most important religious buildings including the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist and numerous churches and chapels. Its most distinctive feature is the unique tradition of manually lighting 102 gas lanterns every evening by a lamplighter who begins work about 30-40 minutes before sunset. The Tumski Bridge leading to the island is covered with love locks from couples. The evening atmosphere with old lanterns glowing and historic buildings illuminated makes it one of the most romantic spots in the city
