Osaka Tenmangu Shrine is dedicated to the god of learning and scholarship, Sugawara no Michizane. Students visit to pray for exam success. The most famous event is the Tenjin Matsuri festival (July 24-25), one of Japan's three greatest festivals featuring a river procession and fireworks. Nearby is Japan's longest covered shopping street (Tenjinbashi-suji). The original shrine dates to the 10th century and has been rebuilt several times.
