Nyhavn

Nyhavn (New Harbor) is a 17th-century waterfront and canal district famous for its colorful townhouses, historic wooden ships, and vibrant cafe culture. Built 1670-1675 by King Christian V, it was once a busy commercial port notorious for sailors and nightlife. Hans Christian Andersen lived at three Nyhavn addresses and wrote classics like The Tinderbox here. Today its Copenhagens most photographed landmark and starting point for canal tours.

faq.subtitle Nyhavn

The bright colors arent historic - buildings were painted in cheerful hues in the 1970s-80s when the area was revitalized from a run-down sailors district. The look was inspired by other Scandinavian harbor towns and has become Copenhagens trademark.

Yes, Nyhavn is touristy and prices reflect the prime location. For cheaper options, walk 5 minutes to nearby streets or buy food from shops. However, paying for the ambiance and views is part of the experience for many visitors.
