Mountaineers Cemetery
A moving cemetery adjacent to St. Mauritius Church, where about 50 climbers who died on the Matterhorn and surrounding peaks are buried. Most graves date from the 19th and early 20th century, the golden age of Alpine climbing. The headstones tell poignant stories of courage and tragedy. Here lie many mountaineering pioneers who opened new routes to these towering peaks. The cemetery offers a quiet moment of reflection on mountaineering history and its sacrifices.
