Mount Kinabalu & Kinabalu National Park
Mount Kinabalu is the highest peak in Southeast Asia (4,095m) and centerpiece of a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Established in 1964, Kinabalu National Park covers 754 sq km of tropical rainforest with exceptional biodiversity. Climbing to the summit requires a mandatory 2-day trek with overnight stay at Panalaban shelters. Only 163 climbing permits are issued daily. Booking months in advance is essential. Mountain guide is compulsory for all climbers. Weather is unpredictable with temperatures reaching freezing at summit. The park is home to 6,000 plant species including the giant Rafflesia flower.
