faq.subtitle Merdeka Square

The 95-meter flagpole was installed in 1989 and was the world's tallest for many years. It's a symbol of national pride — at this spot in 1957, independent Malaya's flag was raised for the first time.

Hari Merdeka (Independence Day) — Malaysia's main national holiday. Grand military parade, processions, fireworks. Square is packed. Best to arrive very early or watch from afar.

Travel Tips

Useful tips for visiting Merdeka Square

August 31 — Independence Day with parade. December 31 — New Year countdown. Very crowded on these days. Regular days are calm and nice for walks.

Classic shot: flagpole + Sultan Abdul Samad Building. Find the black marble plaque — site of first flag raising. Evening — colonial buildings are illuminated.

Combine with walking tour: Masjid Jamek → Merdeka Square → Central Market → Petaling Street (Chinatown). All within 15 min of each other.
