Melbourne Museum is the largest museum in the Southern Hemisphere, located in the historic Carlton Gardens adjacent to the Royal Exhibition Building. The museum explores Victoria and Australia's natural and cultural history, featuring a living rainforest, Bunjilaka Aboriginal Cultural Centre, a blue whale skeleton, and an interactive children's center. The taxidermied racing horse Phar Lap is also on display.

Phar Lap was a legendary Australian racehorse who won 37 of 51 races between 1928-1932, including the Melbourne Cup. He became a national hero during the Great Depression, a symbol of hope. He died mysteriously in 1932 in America. His heart is kept in Canberra, his skeleton in New Zealand, and his taxidermied hide is displayed here in Melbourne.
