Matterhorn Museum
An impressive underground museum known as 'Zermatlantis', telling the story of Zermatt village and the historic Matterhorn ascents. The museum houses a complete reconstruction of the old Hinterdorf village underground. Its most important exhibit is the broken rope from the first successful yet tragic Matterhorn ascent in 1865 led by Edward Whymper. Short films depict the dramatic events. The museum offers deep insight into Valaisan village life and mountaineering history.
