June for Matala Beach Festival. Arrive early in summer for parking. Red Beach nearby is worth the 20-30 min hike.

In the 1960s-70s, hippie communities from around the world lived in the caves. Joni Mitchell was among famous visitors and wrote 'Carey' about her experience here. Police cleared the caves in 1970.
