Martinstor is Freiburg's oldest preserved gate, dating to 1202 according to dendrochronological analysis of its wooden beams. It was part of the original city wall and also served as a prison. In 1901, it was raised from 22 to 60 meters to accommodate new tram traffic. Beside the archway, a memorial tablet commemorates victims of the 1599 witch trials. Located on the main shopping street Kaiser-Joseph-Straße.
