Marinkina Tower
Marinkina Tower is the most famous and iconic tower of the Kolomna Kremlin, standing 31 meters tall with a unique twenty-sided round shape that is unparalleled in Russian defensive architecture. The tower is associated with a tragically romantic legend about Marina Mniszech, a Polish princess who was the wife of two pretenders to the Russian throne known as the False Dmitrys. According to legend, Marina was imprisoned in this very tower after the downfall of her last husband, and in a moment of desperation she transformed herself into a magpie and flew out through the tower window to freedom. The tower is an architectural masterpiece of 16th-century defensive construction, with its thick walls and strategic position providing excellent protection for the Kremlin. Its unusual polygonal shape made it particularly effective against cannon fire, a revolutionary design feature for its time. Today the tower stands as a beloved symbol of the city of Kolomna and attracts thousands of visitors annually who come to admire its unique architecture and hear its fascinating legends. Access to the tower exterior is free around the clock.
