Mammoth Hot Springs
Mammoth Hot Springs features stunning travertine terraces formed by calcium carbonate deposits over thousands of years. Hot water dissolves underground limestone and redeposits it at the surface at a rate of about two tons per day. The springs constantly change - terraces grow, shift, and die. The Upper Terrace has the largest formations while the Lower Terrace is more easily accessible. The terraces range from pure white to orange and brown depending on bacterial activity.
