Lake Inari
Lake Inari, known as the 'Sámi Sea', is Finland's third-largest lake with over 3,300 islands. This sacred lake for the indigenous Sámi people contains Ukko Island, an ancient sacrificial site dedicated to the God of Thunder. In olden times, people made offerings asking for favorable winds. The lake is a deeply spiritual place, scattered with 'seitas' - sacred places of unique natural beauty where the Sámi used to make offerings to gods and spirits. Summer cruises visit Ukko Island, while winter allows snowmobile crossings over the frozen expanse.
