Labuk Bay Proboscis Monkey Sanctuary

Labuk Bay Sanctuary is home to around 150 wild, free-ranging proboscis monkeys living in mangrove forests. In the mid-1990s, when the area was set to be cleared for oil palm, the owner discovered the monkeys and decided to preserve this forest as a sanctuary. The monkeys are distinguished by their distinctive large noses and can be observed up close during feeding times from two observation platforms. Besides proboscis monkeys, silvered leaf monkeys, other primates, and birds can also be spotted. The private sanctuary is located 38km from Sandakan.

faq.subtitle Labuk Bay Proboscis Monkey Sanctuary

The large noses are only found on males and serve several purposes: 1) Sexual selection - females prefer males with larger noses, 2) Sound amplification - larger noses produce louder calls for competing for mates and warning of danger, 3) Indicator of health and strength. Male noses can reach up to 10cm! Females have much smaller noses. These monkeys are endangered and found only in Borneo
