La Merveille (The Marvel) is the famous Gothic wing of the abbey, built in the 13th century over 17 years (1212-1228). It consists of three levels: the lower houses cellars and kitchens, the middle contains the Knights' Hall and guests' room, and the upper features the magnificent cloister and refectory. It is considered one of the finest examples of Gothic monastic architecture in the world. The suspended cloister with its slender columns and garden offers breathtaking views of the bay.
