Sweden's most famous long-distance hiking trail, stretching 440 km from Abisko in the north to Hemavan in the south. The northern section (Abisko to Nikkaluokta, 105 km) is most popular, passing through pristine Arctic wilderness, mountain passes, and alongside Sweden's highest peak, Kebnekaise. Well-maintained with mountain huts every 15-20 km.
Late July to early August: snow melted, rivers manageable, midnight sun, wildflowers bloom. Early September: autumn colors, fewer mosquitoes, but shorter days. Avoid late June (high water, mosquitoes) and late September (early snow possible).

Abisko to Nikkaluokta (105 km): typically 5-7 days at moderate pace. Popular 4-day option: Abisko to Kebnekaise (85 km). Day hike option: Abisko to Abiskojaure and back (30 km). Add extra days for Kebnekaise summit climb.
Highly recommended in July-August! Huts can fill up, especially weekends. Book via STF (Svenska Turistföreningen) website. Unbooked hikers risk sleeping on the floor or camping outside. In September and winter, booking less critical but still advised.
Essential: sturdy hiking boots, rain gear, layers, sleeping bag (if using huts: sheet liner), headlamp, map/GPS, water bottle, first aid kit. Recommended: hiking poles, gaiters (for bogs), mosquito repellent (June-July). Food for entire trip — no shops on trail.
