Koutoubia Mosque
Koutoubia Mosque is the largest mosque in Marrakech and has been one of the city's most important landmarks since the 12th century. It is famous for its 77-meter tall minaret which served as a model for the Giralda in Seville and the Hassan Tower in Rabat. Built under the Almohads in 1158, it is an outstanding example of Moroccan-Andalusian architecture. Its name derives from 'Kutubiyyin' referring to the booksellers market that once surrounded it. The minaret features different geometric decorations on each facade and golden copper balls at its top. The gardens surrounding the mosque provide a peaceful place for relaxation and contemplation.
