Koh Phangan
Koh Phangan is an island famous for its Full Moon Parties, but offering much more: untouched beaches, yoga retreats, jungle waterfalls, and authentic Thai atmosphere away from crowds. It's a magnet for freedom-seekers from around the world.
Full Moon Party
The legendary beach party at Haad Rin draws up to 30,000 people during full moons. Fire shows, neon body paint, dancing until dawn—it's been a cultural phenomenon since 1985. Half Moon and Black Moon Parties offer alternatives during other lunar phases.
Beyond the Parties
The northern part of the island is the complete opposite of Haad Rin. Quiet bays, yoga schools, and vegetarian cafés attract those seeking peace. Many come for a month or two for retreats and digital nomadism.
Beaches
Haad Rin is the nightlife epicenter with two beaches. Thong Nai Pan is a horseshoe bay in the northeast with crystal-clear water. Haad Salad is a peaceful beach with sunsets. Bottle Beach is accessible only by boat or through the jungle—a reward for the effort.
Island Nature
Than Sadet Waterfall is a sacred site where Thai kings once bathed. Phangan Utopia is a panoramic meditation platform for sunsets. Jungle covers most of the island, with trails leading to hidden beaches and viewpoints.
Yoga and Wellness
The island is a global center for yoga and holistic practices. Schools offer programs from weekends to month-long courses. Detox centers, meditation retreats, and massage schools operate year-round. The atmosphere encourages transformation.
Getting There
Ferry from Koh Samui (30 minutes) or from Surat Thani (2.5 hours). Catamarans connect the island with Koh Tao. No direct flights—the nearest airport is on Samui.
Atmosphere and Character
Phangan is an island of contrasts: wild parties coexist with meditative silence. Choose your part of the island to match your style. A motorbike is essential—the roads are steep and you can't get anywhere without one. Best season: January-September.
