Kale Fortress
Kale Fortress (Skopje Fortress) is one of the oldest landmarks in North Macedonia, perched on a hilltop overlooking the city center and the Vardar River. Archaeological evidence suggests fortifications have existed here since the 6th century AD, though the current walls date primarily from the Byzantine and Ottoman periods. The fortress offers magnificent panoramic views of Skopje, particularly impressive at sunset. Inside the walls, you can see remains of Ottoman-era buildings and ongoing archaeological excavations.
