Izmailovsky Kremlin
Izmailovsky Kremlin is a cultural and entertainment complex styled after 17th-century Russian architecture. Built on the site of the historic Romanov estate, it combines museums, craft workshops, restaurants, and the famous Vernissage flea market.
History of the Place
This was once the country residence of Tsar Alexis Mikhailovich, Peter the Great's father. Young Peter found the famous boat here that launched the Russian navy. The modern kremlin was built in 2007 as a cultural center on this historic site.
Architectural Concept
The complex recreates pre-Petrine Russia: wooden towers, buildings with tent roofs, carved window frames. Buildings are brightly painted in traditional style. The centerpiece is St. Nicholas Church, one of Russia's tallest wooden churches.
Kremlin Museums
The grounds house dozens of themed museums: the Bread Museum, Russian Toy Museum, Vodka Museum, Russian Navy History Museum. Each offers interactive exhibits and workshops.
Craft Workshops
Working blacksmiths, potters, weavers, and woodcarvers operate in the kremlin. You can watch masters at work and try traditional crafts yourself. Daily workshops run for both children and adults.
Vernissage
Adjacent to the kremlin sprawls Moscow's largest flea market. Here you'll find antiques, Soviet items, matryoshka dolls, samovars, icons, paintings, jewelry. Bargaining is essential. Best time to visit is weekend mornings.
What to Buy
Matryoshka dolls of all sizes and styles, Khokhloma and Gzhel crafts, Pavlovo Posad shawls, amber jewelry, Soviet badges and coins. Handmade items from local artisans—author dolls, ceramics, woodcarving.
Practical Information
Nearest metro is Partizanskaya, 5 minutes' walk. The grounds are open daily with free admission. Museums have their own schedules. Vernissage operates daily, but more vendors appear on weekends.
