December-April dry season, early morning (8-10 AM) for best visibility. Can see both oceans on clear days. Dress warmly - it's cold at 3,432m!

Irazú is higher (3,432m vs 2,708m) and doesn't require advance booking, but has long weekend queues. Poás requires online booking and has a 20-minute time limit at the crater. Both are about an hour from San José.
