Hohenschwangau Castle
Hohenschwangau Castle is the beautiful yellow castle opposite Neuschwanstein where King Ludwig II spent his childhood. Originally built in the 12th century and completely rebuilt in 1837 by Ludwig's father, King Maximilian II, in neo-Gothic style. The interior is warmer and more intimate than Neuschwanstein, featuring romantic frescoes depicting German knight legends. The guided tour lasts 45 minutes and includes 90 steps with no elevator. Combined tickets available with Neuschwanstein and the Museum of the Bavarian Kings. Less crowded than its famous neighbour but equally fascinating for understanding Ludwig II's childhood influences.
