Heian Shrine
Heian Shrine is one of Kyoto's most famous shrines, built in 1895 to celebrate the 1100th anniversary of the founding of Heian-kyo (ancient Kyoto). The massive vermillion torii gate (24 meters tall) is one of the largest in Japan and a symbol of the city. The Shin-en garden surrounding the shrine is one of Kyoto's most beautiful, especially during cherry blossom and wisteria seasons. The shrine is undergoing renovations until 2030, but visits remain possible.
